Mr. Suzuki's tea farm (Shizuno-en) is situated in the northern plateau of Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture, one of the most renowned areas for tea cultivation in Japan.
While Iwata continues to develop into a modernized city, much of its greenery has been preserved as farmland or a designated nature preservation area, such as Okegaya-numa, a marshland that hosts a variety of aquatic plants, birds, and fish. Okegaya-numa is particularly famous for a wide variety of indigenous dragonflies and damselflies, some populations of which are dwindling, if not endangered, throughout the rest of Japan.
Mr. Suzuki converted his entire green tea farm into organic in 1984 out of sincere desire to contribute to the well-being of the environment and his tea plants, as well as that of his family and the people of his community who grow and consume them.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan has introduced a certification system of organic agricultural products in 2000. Mr. Suzuki's farm, as well as his processing factory, has been certified by the International Natural Farming Center, a third-party organization authorized by and registered with the Japanese Agricultural Ministry in accordance with the Japanese Agricultural Standard of Organic Agricultural Product (the JAS Law).
